Euphrates valley in northern Syria, photo taken on high ground above the site of Jerf el Ahmar. The flood plain can be seen in the distance which prior to the construction of dams upstream was inundated every year during the spring floods making the cultivation of winter cereals impossible. Barley was dry-farmed on the higher terraces.
